History
Early in the 20th
century, the town of Millen, which was located in then Screven County,
began to develop industrially, and a group of citizens organized The
Millen News Publishing Company in July 1903 for the purpose
of giving the citizens a voice through which to express their concerns.
Those citizens
petitioning the Superior Court of Screven County for incorporation of
the company were Alfred Herrington, R.G. Daniel, T.Z. Daniel, A.S.
Anderson, J.M. Edenfield, John L. Gay, Mrs. Emma Lane Patterson, J.C.
Reddick, J.C. Parker, Dr. H.A. Jones, Dr. L.J. Belt, Dr. H.Q. Bell, C.
Parker Company and Daniel Sons & Palmer Company.
Editors for The
Millen News through the years were as follows: July 10, 1903
Alfred Herrinton; Nov. 3, 1905 Warren Van Tyler; 1907-1913 Wiley
Lynch; 1913-1922 J.K. Burkhalter; Feb. 3, 1922 George Dixon Teate
and F.A. Grimes; July 1, 1922 Josephus Camp; Dec. 1, 1923 Ben A.
Neal; Jan. 1, 1942 Ruth H. Neal; Feb. 1, 1946-1985 Walter Harrison
(editor) and Frank M. Edenfield (publisher); 1985-Oct. 1998 Frank M.
Edenfield; Oct. 1998 Allen Smith; and May 2000-present Deborah
Bennett.
In October 1998, Frank
M. Edenfield, longtime editor and owner of The Millen News, sold
the newspaper to The True Citizen of Waynesboro, Roy Chalker Jr.,
owner.
Under Chalkers
supervision, the newspaper was given an updated look, including the
addition of color to its photographs and advertisements. |
